About the Buffalo Sabres Hockey Team

The Buffalo Sabres are a National Hockey League team (NHL) that plays their home games at the Keybank Center in Buffalo, NY. They play in the Atlantic division of the Eastern Conference. Other NHL teams in the same division include the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadians, Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators, and the Detroit Red Wings.

The Buffalo Sabres have been an NHL team since 1970. That year, the league was expanding to 14 teams and they chose the Sabres as one of the league's expansion teams. Punch Imlach was hired as the head coach and General Manager and the team played its first official NHL game on October 10th, 1970 vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins. They would go on to win that game 2-1 and would start the season with a 1-0 record. Being a young expansion team would soon catch up to them as they ultimately would finish the season with a losing record of 24-39-15 and fail to make the playoffs. The following 1971-72 season actually was worse as the Sabres only managed to win 16 games. Head Coach Punch Imlach suffered a heart attack during that year and assistant coach Joe Crozier took over as interim coach of the team. After that season, Imlach stepped down as head coach because of health reasons but stayed on as general manager. With that decision, Imlach made Crozier the team's new head coach starting in the 1972-73 season. Crozier was able to lead the team to their first-ever franchise playoff birth that year, as the team finished with a 37-27-14 record.  Through the years, The Sabres have managed to make the playoffs a total of 29 times but in recent seasons have failed miserably as the team has not made the playoffs since the 2010-11 season when they were knocked out in the first round.

The recent playoff drought that the Buffalo Sabers are in from 2012-2020 is definitely out of the ordinary for the franchise. The longest the Sabers had ever gone before this without making the playoffs was 3 seasons, from 2002 - 2004. In the 29 seasons that they did make the playoffs, they were defeated in the first round a little over half the time with 15 first-round exits. Buffalo Sabres Stanley Cup Finals Appearances

The Sabres have only managed to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals twice in franchise history and in each of those appearances they came out on the losing end, meaning that they have never been able to win the Stanley Cup for the city of Buffalo. They made their first appearance in just their 5th season in the league in 1975. After finishing the 1974-75 regular season with a very impressive 49-16-15 record, Buffalo breezed through the quarter-finals of the playoffs vs. the Chicago Blackhawks, winning the series 4-1. They would then go on to defeat the Montreal Canadians 4-2 in the next round to earn their first-ever trip to the Stanley Cup Finals. In the Finals, they were defeated 4-2 by the Philadelphia Flyers.

It would take the Sabres another 24 seasons to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals again. The 1998-99 Sabres team finished the regular season with a 37-28-17 record and faced off against the Ottawa Senators in round one and they swept the series 4-0. Buffalo would then defeat the Boston Bruins 4-2 in round 2 before defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs in 5 games 4-1 and earning the franchise their 2nd trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they would play the Dallas Stars. Facing Dallas for the Stanley Cup Trophy would prove to be the toughest battle of that season as the Stars were able to defeat the Sabers in 6 games of the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals 4-2. and the Sabres have not been back to the Finals again.
