About the Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars are a National Hockey League Team (NHL) that plays their home games at American Airlines Center In Dallas, TX. They play in the Central division of the Western Conference. Other NHL teams in the same division include the Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado AvalancheWinnipeg JetsMinnesota WildNashville Predators, and the St. Louis Blues

The Stars joined the NHL in 1967 and at the time they were called the Minnesota North Stars. They were part of a six-team expansion for the NHL that year. The other five teams were the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia FlyersPittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues, and Oakland Seals. The first 10 years that North Stars were in the NHL were not going so well. The team and the front office were both struggling to the point of talks were in the works about them potentially folding. At the same time, there was another NHL franchise that was having similar struggles, the Cleveland Barons. The NHL was not in favor of letting two of their teams close their doors and they approved a deal that let the North Stars and Barons combine into one team. The merge saved the Minnesota franchise because they were able to now put a winning team on the ice by merging their best players with the incumbent of Cleveland's best players. By 1981, the Stars were playing in their 1st Stanley Cup. They would go on to lose that series to the New York Islanders 4 games to 1 but it was clear that the franchise that almost didn't make it into the 1980s was back on their feet.

The Move From Minnesota to Dallas

In 1993, the North Stars were once again in an old familiar spot. The team was struggling to draw fans to their games and they were granted permission to move the franchise from Minnesota to Dallas. The team officially started the 1993-1994 season as the Dallas Stars. They took the "North" out of their name but kept "Stars" because it reflected their new home state of Texas, which is known as the "Lone Star State".

Hockey fans in Dallas were happy to have an NHL team in their city and welcomed the Stars with open arms. Fortunately, in that first season, the Stars won 42 games and were able to make the playoffs which also helped build their new fan base.

Since they entered the league in 1967, the stars have played in the Stanley Cup Finals five times, and only won the Stanley Cup one time, which was 1991. In 2020, the Stars had a great chance to win the cup when they faced off against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The team ultimately lost 4-2 in the best of 7 series but capped off a great season.

The Dallas Stars will go into the upcoming 2024 season with high hopes. The team is hoping that the success of 2019-2020 will spark ticket sales and increase their season ticket fan base.
